United Studio Technologies has expanded its microphone lineup with the new UT Vintage87, a large diaphragm condenser microphone designed for studio recording and voice applications. Based on the platform of the acclaimed UT Twin87, the new model focuses on a fixed true-cardioid design while retaining the component quality and attention to detail that have become hallmarks of United microphones.

Built Around a Custom K87 Capsule.
At the heart of the UT Vintage87 is United’s custom-developed UT-K87 capsule. The 34 mm dual-diaphragm capsule is precision-machined from brass and fitted with a 6-micron Japanese PET diaphragm featuring 24k gold sputtering. Each capsule is assembled in a clean-room environment to ensure consistent performance and reliability.
By focusing exclusively on a cardioid polar pattern, the UT Vintage87 eliminates the need for pattern switching circuitry. According to United, this approach contributes to an improved signal-to-noise ratio while maintaining a focused and detailed sound capture.
A Transformer Designed Without Compromise.
Another standout feature is the microphone’s custom-wound output transformer, manufactured in the USA. Built with large nickel laminations, the transformer contains significantly more metal mass than many comparable 87-style designs. The goal is to preserve headroom, low-frequency response, and signal integrity throughout the recording chain.
Combined with a FET-based amplifier circuit and carefully selected components—including polystyrene, tantalum, and WIMA film capacitors—the design reflects United’s emphasis on high-quality signal paths and long-term reliability.
Features for Modern Recording Environments.
The UT Vintage87 includes several practical features for everyday studio work. A switchable RF filter helps reduce electromagnetic interference, while an 80 Hz high-pass filter and -10 dB pad provide additional flexibility when working with different sources and recording situations.
With a self-noise specification of less than 10 dB, the microphone is well suited for applications where detail and clarity are critical, including vocal recording, voice-over production, and spoken-word content.
Construction and Included Accessories.
The microphone features a solid milled brass body with nickel plating and a gold-plated XLR connector. Included in the package are a suspension shockmount and a vintage-style storage pouch, allowing users to put the microphone straight to work in the studio.
